DCU Expo 2023 Final Year Projects
74 144. The Potential for Hydrogen Ramjet Engines in Aviation This project investigates the potential for hydrogen-powered ramjet engines as amethod of carbon- neutral aviation. The project is focused specifically on the propulsion system. Amathematical model was developed of a ramjet engine. A small-scale ramjet, based off the model, was designed and built. Tests on hydrogen which measured thrust, pressures, and temperatures throughout the ramjet aided in validation of the mathematical model so that it could be used to simulate engines onmuch larger aircraft. Class Mechanical andManufacturing Engineering (Year 5) Project Area 3-DModelling, Arduino, Mechanical Design andManufacture, Renewable Energy Technology, Thermodynamics Project Technology C/C++, Solidworks Student Name(s) Ciaran Smith Email ciaran.smith74@mail.dcu.ie Supervisor Dr James Carton 145. Android Book Scanner This Android App allows users to view details on any published book. Using OCR the app will scan a book and display the book’s info along with reviews left by others. A user can share their thoughts on books by rating or leaving a review to let others know their opinion of the book. A user can easily keep track of books they read or find new titles and compete with friends to readmore books. Class Computer Applications Project Area Android, Computer Vision, Databases, Mobile App, Web Application Project Technology CSS, HTML5, Python, SQLite, Django, Kotlin Student Name(s) Kevin Ledwith | Eoghan Scanlan Email kevin.ledwith2@mail.dcu.ie | eoghan.scanlan6@mail.dcu.ie Supervisor Dr GrahamHealy 146. Redesign of Test Rig and Implementation of Bioassay This project investigates the use of centrifugal microfluidics in cPCR testing. The objective of this project was to redesign a centrifugal test rig and to design and build the necessary heating and cooling components that would facilitate the ability to conduct a PCR test on a rotational moving disc known as Lab on a Disc (LoaD). The purpose of this technology is for use in point-of-care facilities in resource-poor countries. Class Mechanical andManufacturing Engineering (Year 4) Project Area Biomedical Engineering, FluidMechanics, Mechanical Design andManufacture Project Technology C/C++, Excel/VB, LabVIEW, Solidworks, Microfluidics Student Name(s) Samuel Fairbrother Email samuel.fairbrother2@mail.dcu.ie Supervisor Dr David Kinahan
