Named Entity Recognition for the Irish Language This project entails the development of the first Named Entity Recognition (NER) tool for the Irish language to help empower Irish speakers in the digital age, safeguarding the language’s cultural and linguistic significance. The project comprises of the fine-tuning of BERTmodels for the NER task and also experiments with different methods to overcome the challenges of developing a natural language processing tool in a low-resource setting. Hydrogel Actuated Latex Valve System for Automated Assay Implementation on Lab-on-a-Disc Platforms The objective of this project is to explore the integration of highly absorbent hydrogels, specifically super absorbent polymers within microchannels with the usage of passive or active valves for centrifugal microfluidic platforms. Utilising hydrogel-actuated latex valves will enable automated liquid routing for complex biological assay which enhances the potential for sequential on-disc unit operations. This will expand the capabilities and capacity within the platform for advanced point-of-care testing.
