DCU Expo 2024 - Final Year Projects
38 24. Minerva Minerva is a chatbot specialising in database access assistance. This project investigates howwe could make large databases more accessible through conversational AI. Minerva allows users with little to no database experience to create, execute and view the results of database queries all through a web chat interface. Minerva is powered by natural language technology, using it to recognise and interpret user prompts and pass them through a Text-To-SQL model before executing the query on a loaded SQL database. Student Programme Computer Applications Project Area Artificial Intelligence, Databases, Natural Language Processing, Web Application Project Technology CSS, HTML5, JavaScript, Python, SQL, Machine Learning, Flask Student Name(s) Gareth Hogan | Jack Farrell Email gareth.hogan22@mail.dcu.ie | jack.farrell82@mail.dcu.ie Supervisor Prof Gareth Jones 25. Laser Control and Testing This project investigates the relationship between a laser diode’s operating temperature and its resultant operating frequency output, particularly focusing on lasers within the fibre optics spectrum. A control scheme was implemented to regulate the bias current, thereby controlling the laser’s temperature through a thermoelectric cooler. Lab testing was undertaken to validate and compare the findings derived from simulations. The laser’s output power and input current concerning temperature variations were investigated in detail. By testing these dynamics, the project aims to deepen comprehension of semiconductor laser behaviour and control strategies. Student Programme Mechatronic Engineering (Year 5) Project Area Control Systems, Optical Communications, Simulation Project Technology Matlab, Simulink Student Name(s) Donal McKay Email donal.mckay3@mail.dcu.ie Supervisor Prof LiamBarry 26. GrantNest GrantNest connects homeowners and buyers with government grants for housing, energy efficiency and sustainability. The platform simplifies finding and applying for grants by offering personalised recommendations based on user profiles and property criteria. GrantNest ensures accessibility and ease of navigation, allowing users to explore available grants and determine eligibility. It harnesses information from various sources, providing up-to-date and accurate data on grants for solar panels, home energy upgrades, and adaptations for older people or those with disabilities. We streamline the application process and offer tailored guidance, empowering individuals tomake informed decisions about improving their homes or buying a property.
