DCU Expo 2024 - Final Year Projects

39 27. Anomaly Detection in CNCManufacturing CNC (Computer Numerical Control) refers to the usage of computer-controlledmachines to transforma solidmaterial into another shape. These machines have become integral components in both small-scale manufacturing operations and large industrial settings, with prices ranging fromapproximately $1,000 up to $500,000. Hence, effective maintenance of these machines is crucial, particularly in smaller companies. In collaboration with Stoney CNC, this project aims to design data-based solutions for detecting and predicting anomalies in machine behaviour usingmachine learningmethods. By designing these systems for predictive maintenance, problems can be detected before amajor failure occurs, and parts can be replaced, saving time, effort, and costs. The bubble curtain, consisting of an air stone bar bubble diffuser emitting a curtain of air bubbles, is evaluated for its efficiency in capturingmicroplastic particles of varying sizes under controlled laboratory conditions. Experimental parameters, including air flow rate, water velocity and bubble diffuser angle placement, are varied to assess their impact on microplastic capture efficiency. Results demonstrate the efficiency of the bubble curtain in effectively trappingmicroplastics, with significant capture rates observed across a range of particle sizes.
